New Release: Tabletop Game Mechanics for Modern RPG’s

Sometimes a project comes along that lets you combine multiple disciplines in unexpected ways. Over the past few months, I’ve been developing a series of innovative game mechanics for tabletop role-playing games, and I’m pleased to announce that all four are now available on DriveThruRPG.

Wheel of Fortune, The Manual of Lockpicking, Alchemy of Crafting, and The Time Machine each tackle a common problem in RPG gameplay: how to make routine actions feel engaging and consequential. Rather than relying on single dice rolls that resolve instantly, these systems use visual, tactile mechanics that turn moments like picking locks, crafting items, or racing against time into mini-games that generate genuine tension at the table.

Each ruleset features custom-designed visual aids—wheels, tracking sheets, and tables—that required careful consideration of both game balance and graphic clarity. The challenge was creating systems that feel intuitive in the moment while maintaining enough depth to reward strategic thinking. It’s a design problem that sits comfortably between game mechanics and information design, which made it particularly satisfying to develop.

The response so far has been encouraging. Game masters seem to appreciate having alternatives to standard skill checks that create more dramatic moments without adding excessive complexity. The visual components also help players stay engaged during other people’s turns, which was an unexpected benefit.

You can find all four systems at DriveThruRPG . Whether you’re into tabletop gaming or simply curious about how design thinking applies to game mechanics, I’d be happy to discuss the development process.

"Replacing single dice rolls with visual systems that create tension."
